Illegal cricket betting isn’t just a shadow activity anymore — authorities are cracking down hard in Rourkela, Odisha, after uncovering a World Cup-linked betting network. Police launched coordinated raids across the city, detaining multiple people and seizing cash and electronic devices as part of an ongoing investigation.
Crackdown on Betting Activities
On Wednesday, law enforcement teams from the Rourkela Police carried out search operations at several locations across the city — including areas under the Plant Site, Uditnagar, Raghunathpali, and Brahmani Tarang police stations — following intelligence on suspected illegal betting tied to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2026.
Investigators searched homes and premises of local residents and business owners, seizing computers, laptops, and large sums of cash during the raids. While the exact amount recovered hasn’t been officially confirmed, reports suggest cash worth around ₹20 lakh has been confiscated so far.
Detentions and Ongoing Investigation
Although official police confirmation is still pending, sources indicate that four to five youths were detained and taken in for questioning in connection with the case. Officers are now analyzing digital evidence, financial records, and possible connections to wider betting networks.
Law enforcement teams continued their search operations across approximately 10–11 locations at the time of reporting, signaling the investigation is still unfolding.
Why This Matters
Illegal betting rackets have become a persistent challenge in India — particularly during major sporting events like the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which drives huge betting interest online and offline. In recent years, similar crackdowns in other regions have led to significant arrests and seizures of cash and digital infrastructure used to process bets.
The Rourkela operation highlights ongoing efforts by police to curb illegal gambling networks that exploit major tournaments for illicit gain.
